Reading:

The makers of a controversial computer game about bullying have decided to go ahead and launch it despite calls for it to be banned. In the game, players take on the role of a new student at a school and have to fight the bullies, by punching them or hitting them with a baseball bat. Critics have said that the game encourages violence, but the makers deny this and say that, while there is violence in the game, it is just an amusing look at school life, besides which, the violence in the game is directed against the bullies to protect pupils who are being bullied. The makers also say that players will learn to stand up to bullies. A British politician, a former minister, has called for it to be banned as it might affect the way young people perceive violence. Anti-bullying charities have said that the game might make people respond violently to bullies, which might make things more complicated and result in injuries.

Susan: Oh, this is lovely. Would you like to try some?
Christine: No thanks, Susan. I'm really enjoying my pasta!

Susan: So, do you want to play tennis this weekend?
Christine: I'm afraid I can't play tennis.

Susan: NO, are you joking? I'm sure you can play tennis. EVERYBODY can play tennis.
Christine: Well, I can't. BUT I can play golf.

Susan: Really, I can play golf, too. - but not very well.
Christine: I have an idea. Why don't we play tennis this weekend and then next weekend golf?

Susan: OK, that's a good idea. You don't play tennis - I don't play golf. We both can learn a new sport!
Christine: That's it. I think it's a brilliant idea!

Susan: Now, tell me about your new job. When do you start?
Christine: Next week. I'm in the accounting department. I make telephone calls to the banks, check the accounts, keep records... that sort of thing.

Susan: It sounds like an excellent job.
Christine: How is your job?

Susan: Oh, it's OK. It's boring. I work at the computer all day long, each and every day at the computer.
Christine: I'm sure it isn't so bad!

Tourist: Excuse me, can you help me? I'm lost!

Tourist: I'd like to go to the museum, but I can't find it. Is it far?

Laura was born in Padua, a lovely, old town in Italy, but now she lives in Germany with her husband and their four children. However, her husband isn’t German, he’s English. He works in the Finance Department of an international company in Stuttgart. Their children are all bilingual. They speak English and Italian, but at home they usually speak Italian, even with their father. And now they’re learning German at school and from their friends. They’re very lucky!

Laura and her family live in a big, old flat in the middle of Stuttgart, near the park. The flat has got six rooms, a large kitchen and two bathrooms. There’s a living- room, a dining-room, a small study and three bedrooms. The two boys are twelve and ten and they share a bedroom. The two girls are eight and six and share another bedroom. The girls like to share a bedroom, but the boys don’t.

Laura doesn’t go out to work. She wants to take an intensive German course first. Her husband, Douglas, often has meetings in the USA, and then Laura is alone with the children. But that’s not a problem for Laura because she makes friends very easily. She’s already got a small group of international friends from Ireland, Switzerland, Spain, and, of course, Italy, and they often meet for coffee and a chat.

Michael Jackson is one of the most widely beloved entertainers of all-time. He was born in August 29, 1958, in Gary, Indiana. His father, Joseph Jackson, had been a guitarist but had given up his musical aspirations to provide for his family as a crane operator.

How can exercise keep me fit?

Exercise can keep you fit by maintaining your weight, by improving your muscle mass, toning muscles and shaping your body the way you want it to be. Exercise can improve your circulation, aid your digestion and keep your colon working properly. Exercise is for individuals of all ages who want to be fit. There are mild exercises, moderate ones and exercises of high intensity. Individuals can pick the type of exercise that fits their lifestyle and health needs.
To be fit we all need to eat proper foods, get plenty of water, plenty of rest and to make sure that we all exercise on a daily basis. Your doctor can help you to incorporate exercising into your treatment plan if you have health issues. Women who are pregnant should also exercise daily but in a way that is not harmful to the mom-to-be or to her unborn baby. There are exercises designed for every age group: the babies and toddlers, school-aged kids, teens, young adults, older adults and the elderly .
Exercising can be fun and there is so many types of exercises to choose from such as walking, jogging, using exercise equipment, swimming, playing sports games, dancing, skating, judo and yoga, even joining a exercise club or program such as jazzercise or an aerobics class.

Wild animals (and wild plants) and the wild places where they live are seriously threatened almost everywhere. One species has become extinct in each year of this century. But many hundreds are now in danger. Lack of attention would lead to the rapid advance of the process of extinction.

Already many kinds of wild animals have been so reduced in number that their role in the ecosystem is forgotten. Animals like the great apes, the whales, seals etc. are thought to be in danger of extinction.

But even more important, perhaps than individual kinds of animals and plants, whole habitats are in danger of vanishing: marshes are being drained, and the world forests, especially tropical forests are being cut down to satisfy man’s needs of timber and paper.

What would our world be like if all the wild animals and wild plants vanished? - Would our life still exist then?

A memorable holiday

Four months ago, my family and I visited Sam Son, one of the most famous beaches in Viet Nam. We arrived at the hotel at 7.30 pm. Everybody was tired so we had dinner and then we went to bed. The next morning we got up early and went to the beach to see the sunrise. The sight was very beautiful and there were lots of white sands along the coast. Sea water was blue. The air was fresh and cool. At about 8.00 am, there were hundreds of people. Many swam while the others sunbathed. The children liked building sandcastles. They screamed, they laughed and they talked together. It was very noisy. In the afternoon, the weather was too hot so we didn’t go out the hotel until 7 p.m. After dinner we went round the town and bought some souvenirs to my friends. I also bought lots of seafood because my grandparents like them. Sam Son was really fantastic. I wanted to stay there longer but we had to work the day after. We came back home and felt comfortable after a good holiday.

Foods that help us stay healthy

Some people do not care about what foods they should eat to stay healthy, but still, it is good to know what benefits certain foods can provide.

Starting with bananas, in many diets, eating bananas is not recommended, because it is a fruit that can make us gain weight. However, bananas contain kali that can help us control blood pressure and also strengthen the digestive system by protecting our stomach from acids.

Avocados, traditionally in parts of Latin America, are used as a natural remedy for dilating blood vessels allowing blood to flow better. Besides, its high content of vitamin E helps fertility.

Celery is good for calming the nervous system. Celery also helps detoxify the body caused by cigarette smoking and helps control high blood pressure. If celery is eaten daily it will help us lose weight.

Carrots have great potential to prevent cancer, combating constipation and reduce cholesterol. Lemons which contain high amounts of vitamin C, are excellent for detoxifying the liver. Garlic helps fight harmful bacteria and increase our resistance.

Favorite camping memory

This camping trip was especially memorable. It was a day unlike any other. We arrived at the beach and frantically chose a spot for the tent. Dad was anxious to get in the water and start fishing. I was just anxious to get in the water . The day was full of adventure and after a long day we finally snuggled into our sleeping bags. Camping at the beach was great because you could always hear the roar of the waves. "This night the waves seemed closer than usual" I thought as I dozed off.
I awoke in the middle of the night with waves crashing inside the tent. The full moon had caused an extremely high tide and the tent was engulfed with water. I awoke to screaming and commotion and fell right off my sleeping bag down into the cold water. I rose to my knees just in time to catch a wave right in the face. I laughed aloud at the same time I screamed. It was the absolute funniest thing you have ever seen. This camping trip to the beach was hilarious. Mom and Dad running around screaming as the sleeping bags and camping gear were floating away on the waves. I ran and jumped with glee. I laughed until I cried. It was the funniest thing I will ever remember in my life.

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Television

Television is a very important form of communication; however, it also brings both positive and negative influences, directly into our homes.

There are many television shows on the air that are informative and educational. The right television shows can teach our children about morals and values as well as right from wrong. Besides, public television as well as cable television channels such as National Geographic and The History Channel also serve as learning tools for adults. In fact many colleges and universities use local channels to provide distance learners the opportunity to attend lectures given on television.

Along with the advantages listed above, there are also disadvantages to television. Many channels provide opportunities for children to be exposed to more inappropriate content. It is not difficult for children to have access to programs intended to be viewed only by mature audiences and they are easily affected by violence and sex scenes. Moreover, if pupils spend too much time on watching television, they will become lazy and it affects their eye-sight. They do not pay any attention to their studies which will affect their educational career.

In conclusion, in spite of all these disadvantages, I think the advantages of television definitely outweigh the disadvantages. In the field of education and entertainment television's vast importance cannot be denied.

Watching a movie at a cinema and at home, which do you prefer?

Watching movies is an amazing activity to relax for many people nowadays. After a hard-working day, what can be more satisfying than watching films and concentrating with amusement on the plots? I like seeing films, too. Although I have many film DVDs at home, I still prefer watching films at cinemas.
One of the biggest factors that make me feel like watching films at cinemas is the bigger screen and realer sound I can enjoy there. I have a TV which can play my DVDs, but I do not have enough money to buy a modern and fashioned system of projector and loudspeakers which is sold with an extremely high price at store. Furthermore, even if I could afford it, I still would not feel as satisfied as in a cinema, because I know that cinemas always invest their capital in developing the quality of their films so the images and sound in cinemas are usually perfect, and I do not think that anyone can easily get such quality in his home.
Besides a higher quality of the films, a second factor that makes me attached to cinemas is that I can take this as an opportunity to go out and get out of the confine of my house. After an exhausting week with a lot of stresses, I often go to the cinema to see a film so that I can effectively use the remaining time of freedom.
Additionally, the third reason for my statement is that by going to a cinema, I can watch the film with many people. Actually, I can invite my friends to my house to watch a film with me, but I still do not think it is a great idea, because nowhere can we find as many people watching the same movie as in a cinema. Moreover, when watching film in a cinema, one can laugh, cry and even be scared about the films with people all around him, he can talk freely with others about the film and the characters, which makes the films even more interesting and more attracting than at home.

The Great Wall of China

The Great Wall of China was built over 2000 years ago and is the longest man-made structure ever built. It is an instantly recognisable structure which many people are familiar with, though often know little about.

The Great Wall of China is approximately 6000 kilometre long. In places the Great Wall is 25 feet tall. It ranges from 15 to 30 feet wide. The original Great Wall was built over a period of approximately 20 years. Most of the current Great Wall was built during the Ming dynasty (between 1368 and 1644.).

Many thousands of people were involved in the building of the wall. From records, it appears that 300,000 soldiers and 500,000 common people were involved in constructing the original Great Wall. Many people lost their lives during this work and archaeologists have discovered many human remains buried under sections of the wall.

It is believed that the main purpose of the Great Wall was to protect China from invasion or attack by northern tribes.
